To Double Text or Not to Double Text? That is the Question

Published on May 7, 2024

The "double text"—sending a second message before you get a reply to your first—is a source of major anxiety in modern dating. Are you being persistent or pushy? Confident or desperate? Let's break down when it's okay and when you should holster your thumbs.

When It's Okay to Double Text

Not all double texts are created equal. In some contexts, it's completely fine.

  • To Add Context or Information: You sent a message and then realized you forgot a crucial piece of information. For example, "Let's meet at 7" followed by "At the place on Main Street, by the way!" This is perfectly acceptable.
  • After a Significant Time Lapse: If it's been a day or two, sending a new message to start a new conversation is not a desperate double text. It's simply re-engaging. Use a low-pressure conversation starter (see our post on reviving a dead chat!).
  • To Be Playful: If you have a fun, established rapport, a humorous double text can work. For example, sending a question and then, an hour later, a funny GIF of someone waiting impatiently. This only works if you're confident it will be well-received.

When You Should Avoid Double Texting

In other scenarios, double texting can signal neediness and hurt your chances.

  • When You're Just Seeking a Response: Sending a follow-up like "?", "you there?", or "hello?" just a few hours after your first text is the classic needy double text. It puts pressure on the other person and can be a major turn-off.
  • After a Question Has Been Asked: If your last message was a direct question and they haven't replied, they've seen it. Sending another message can feel like you're demanding an answer. Give them space.

The Golden Rule

Before you send that second text, ask yourself: **"Am I adding new value to the conversation, or am I just seeking validation?"** If you're starting a new topic, sharing something funny, or adding important info, you're likely fine. If you're just bumping the chat to get a reply, it's better to wait. Patience is a virtue, especially in the early stages of texting. A confident person isn't worried about an immediate reply.
